Selection of Hotels

Set in the beautiful Ziller Valley, the Hotel Malerhaus is a family-run hotel ideally situated only 5 minutes’ walk from the centre of Fügen, and directly opposite the Zillertal Railway station. The modern, bright rooms all have private bathrooms with bath or shower, flat screen TV, hairdryer and a room safe. All rooms have balconies. Hotel facilities include a top-floor spa/wellness suite with panoramic rooftop terrace and a state-of-the-art infrared cabin, sauna, steam bath and massage and beauty treatments (at extra cost). Alternatively, the Erlebnistherme Zillertal (thermal spa) is just 300 metres or so from the hotel. The hotel restaurant serves a buffet breakfast in the morning, and a wide range of Italian (pizza) and traditional Austrian dishes in the evening, and there’s a bar and a café on site too. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.

The Parkhotel Brunauer is on the north side of Salzburg, close to the railway station, 2.5km from the old town (about 35 minutes’ walk) and just 15 minutes’ walk from the Mirabell Palace and Gardens. All guest rooms are air-conditioned and come with an en-suite bathroom, flat screen TV, and an in-room safe. The hotel has extensive well-kept grounds, and facilities include a sauna, fitness room, and bicycles for hire. The restaurant serves a substantial breakfast buffet and modern Austrian cuisine made from regional products in the evening, and there’s also an on-site pizzeria and a café/bar with a large garden terrace serving a wide range of drinks. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, including the garden.

Please note that double/twin hotel rooms in Austria are usually furnished with Austrian twin beds; one bed base with two single mattresses, each with its own bedlinen. Twin rooms with two separate beds may be available on request, but cannot be guaranteed.

Tuesday: Check in for your flight to Munich. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to the Hotel Malerhaus in Fügen.

Wednesday: Our first port of call is Rattenberg, the smallest town in Austria, with a long history of glass-blowing plus a picturesque well-preserved medieval centre and rows of brightly-painted townhouses. Admission to Rattenberg’s Museum of Popular Arts and spice shop is also included. In the afternoon we make the short trip to Jenbach for the narrow-gauge train journey to Mayrhofen*.

Thursday: Today we depart for Innsbruck, the capital of the Austrian Tyrol. Here we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the city plus included entrance to the Hofburg, Innsbruck ski jump, return funicular to Hungerburg and cable car from there to Seegrube.

Friday: The coach will head to Achensee today, Tyrol’s largest lake. You’ll have a boat cruise between Achenkirk and Pertisau, followed by lunch in Pertisau village. We then take a nostalgic train ride on the original rack railway between Seespitz and Jenbach.

Saturday: Today we travel to Mittersill where will board the famous Pinzgau narrow-gauge railway for the 29-kilometre journey to Zell am See. There’ll be time for lunch here, then in the afternoon the coach will take you to Kitzbühel, where you will have free time to explore this famous ski resort before returning to Fügen for the evening.

Sunday: We check out of the hotel in the morning and travel to Salzburg. After a guided walking tour of Salzburg, with its impressive and fully-preserved fortress and interesting historic buildings, you’ll have some free time to explore the beautiful city further before your first night’s stay at the Parkhotel Brunauer, Salzburg.

Monday: Today we depart for Wolfgangsee, a lake around 30km east of Salzburg. You’ll enjoy a boat cruise between St Gilgen and St Wolfgang, and ride the steepest rack railway in Austria, from St Wolfgang to the summit of Mount Schafberg. This historic railway has been transporting passengers since 1893, and the journey takes about 35 minutes. On a clear day, there are 360˚ vistas over glittering lakes and majestic mountains, and you’ll be hard-pushed to find more magnificent views anywhere! We’ll return to the hotel in good time for dinner and your final night’s stay.

Tuesday: Time to head home. You will be transferred from the hotel to the airport for your flight home.
